To “cross the chasm” and be accessible to the general public, we believe smart home and IoT products have to solve a real need in the home, must use existing infrastructure, and embed in the current routine and “just works” for everyone in the home. Take a look around your home, light sockets are in all of the very BEST locations: entryways, hallways, center of most rooms, at tops and bottoms of stairs, at everyone’s bedside. In recent years, we’ve seen a plethora of so- called ‘smart lightbulbs’ arrive on the market, often providing consumers with their first foray into the smart home. However, as I’ve noted before, aside from being ‘connected’ and controllable via an app, for the most part smart lightbulbs and many other smart home products aren’t particularly smart after all. The BeON Burglar Deterrent uses your light sockets and brings a fresh perspective to home security by taking a proactive rather than a reactive approach. What we created is just as easy to install, set up and operate as the traditional single-function bulbs that occupy them now. Our goal is to utilize every socket in the home as a node in a mesh network and we’re making it happen by solving serious needs in the home rather than just mere conveniences. The BeON Burglar Deterrent creates the illusion of an occupied home to deter burglars while you are away. It also include safety features that provide light when you need it most during power outages or for an emergency evacuation. As easy to install and use a light bulb, we needed a low power wireless technology that was familiar, robust, ubiquitous, standardized and “just works” and this is why we designed our product with Bluetooth Smart. For the last year, we have been working closely with Cambridge Silicon Radio using a first implementation of a Bluetooth mesh for our platform and we have been participating in the definition of the Bluetooth SIG mesh version. If our approach, and those like us, is successful it will lead to a significant role of standards like Bluetooth in the nascent Smart Home market.
